Prevalence is 3.7/100000

  • Women are more affected then men (3:1)

  • Most common age group is 50 years

  • 90% presents as solitary thyroid nodule

  • 5 % of all solitary thyroid nodules are malignant.

  • Well differentiated thyroid malignancy are common and have excellent

  • prognosis & survival around 90 % Over 10 years.

  • FNAC which is used to confirm diagnosis has 70 to 90% sensitivity &

  • cannot differentiate between certain benign and malignant disease

  • where diagnostic lobectomy becomes necessary.

  • Early sign include swelling in neck

  • Change of voice,difficulty in swallowing or

  • Breathlessness are features of advance disease.

  • Surgery remains the mainstay of treatment.
